Warm rose, maroon, and tan patina combine atop the surfaces of this New Orleans piece, with deeper shades evident in the protected areas. The strike is sharp and fully defines the wreath elements. This piece is well advanced in the CAC census, which indicates a low population, just 20 pieces, for the entire issue. At the upper end, CAC reports three coins in MS66 and only two examples finer, both MS67. The Norweb pedigree (Bowers & Merena, October 1987, lot 599) is confirmed by a toning mark at K5 on the reverse rim. The piece realized $3,960 at the Norweb sale, a strong price for the time. The current CAC price guide value is $7,200. This piece is a highlight of the present sale and will draw significant buyer interest.
