Comments: Obverse 1, when paired with the Reverse of 1861, is in a later die state. The horizontal die lines in the shield have weakened and there is evidence of die erosion in the right field. Surprisingly Reverse A from 1861, after being used in 1862, is again used to strike coinage in 1865. The key diagnostic is the die defect on the left edge of the coin ear. Due to excessive usage, this reverse die now exhibits a die crack from the rim to the left wreath maple leaf. This crack may also be visible on some specimens struck in 1862.

Once again the plate coin exhibits a typical Obverse 1 strike resulting in a flat head.

Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, AU55
